YWCA Evansville Accessible Bathroom Renovation Project

For 114 years, YWCA Evansville has provided safe shelter and support to women and youth as they work to transform their lives. Constructed in 1924, our building in downtown Evansville has endured many changes and upgrades, but there is still so much work to be done.

In 1979, YWCA Evansville opened the area’s first domestic violence shelter and began providing services 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. The shelter is housed on the second floor of our historic building where many of the facilities are outdated and in need of a transformation. One of our priorities as we assess future projects is the shelter’s capacity to serve all individuals regardless of limitations or ability. Unfortunately, our shelter currently lacks an ADA accessible bathroom, and our goal is to remedy this issue.

We hope to transform one of the 1950’s era shelter bathrooms into a completely updated ADA compliant facility. The current bathroom features outdated pink tiles, a collapsing sink, and dated toilets that often leak or clog. The renovation will feature an ADA compliant shower, new toilet, grab bars, as well as an accessible sink and vanity. The doorway, flooring, and lighting will also be updated to increase accessibility.

This project will truly provide dignity and access to all YWCA shelter residents. By transforming the current multi-use facility into a single-use bathroom featuring an accessible design, we will enhance the quality of life and experience of homeless clients with disabilities living in our shelter.
