Karl Werrlein's Story

Seven years ago, when I moved to Babcock Ranch, I met a fellow veteran at the mailbox, his name was Tony Durante. I was wearing an Air Force hat and he asked if I had served in any wars. I told him I was a Vietnam veteran, and he immediately started talking to me about veterans' benefits. At the time, I knew very little about the benefits available to me and had never applied for any of them. He took me to the local American Legion post in a neighboring town, signed me up for membership, and helped me schedule an appointment with a Veterans Service Officer who worked through the American Legion. That visit changed my life. I learned about benefits I had earned through my military service and never knew existed. There were educational opportunities, healthcare programs, dental benefits, insurance options, and many other resources available to veterans. More importantly, I learned what the American Legion is truly about: helping veterans long after they come home. War changes people. It leaves memories that never fade. Veterans understand that better than anyone. The first night in-country, hearing mortars in the distance, watching flares light up the night sky, hearing gunfire, and wondering what tomorrow would bring. Those experiences stay with you forever. The American Legion provides a place where veterans can come together, share stories, support one another, and feel understood. It is a place where veterans can feel comfortable because everyone there has walked a similar path. That is why I am so passionate about building a permanent Veterans Community Center in Babcock Ranch. My mission is to create a home for American Legion Post 415 and a welcoming place for current and future veterans. It will be a place where veterans can gather, find support, build friendships, and continue serving their community. Our veterans answered the call when our nation needed them. They gave so much to all of us. Now it is our turn to give back and ensure they always have a place to call home.
