Black Breastfeeding Week 2025 is just around the corner! This year’s theme, “Boots on the Ground”, Rooted in Breastfeeding Success, Grounded in Community Support, emphasizes the importance of honoring our history, reconnecting with our roots, and coming together to nurture, support, and protect Black mothers and babies. We aim to create spaces where solidarity and support can flourish.

Black Breastfeeding Week, observed annually from August 25-31, was founded in 2013 by Kimberly Seals Allers, Kiddada Green, and Anayah Sangodele-Ayoka to address breastfeeding disparities and inequities within the Black community. The week aims to raise awareness about unique challenges Black women face, amplify Black voices in breastfeeding support, and celebrate the resilience of Black breastfeeding mothers.

Addressing Infant Mortality

Black infant mortality rates are higher than those of white infants, and breastfeeding can help reduce this risk.

Reducing Diet-Related Diseases

Breast milk provides essential nutrients and antibodies, helping to reduce the risk of diet-related diseases that disproportionately affect Black children.

Promoting Cultural Competency

Black Breastfeeding Week aims to address the lack of diversity in the lactation field and promote culturally competent support for Black mothers.

Empowering Black Mothers

The week provides a platform for Black mothers to share their experiences, celebrate their achievements, and advocate for better support

This event is a key event in our 2025 campaign to raise $25,000 to support improving breastfeeding experiences in our communities and growing our Black lactation workforce. Our goal is to improve program resources and ensure accessibility for members of our community. We need YOUR help!”
