An ADA Accessible Bathroom For Billy

Our 12 year old son, Billy, is in need of an accessible wheelchair bathroom with a roll in shower. Billy battles Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy, a devastating muscle wasting disease. This ADA bathroom will give him independence, comfort, and dignity. It will allow for our family to assist him in using the toilet and shower.

Despite this difficult journey, Billy continues to live his life to the fullest. His favorite part of every day of school is spending time with his friends. He loves video games because in them he can do anything any other kid can do and the things he has never been able to do because of Muscular Dystrophy. For a boy afflicted with a disease that robs you of your strength, Billy is the strongest person we have ever known.

Fortunately, the only downstairs bathroom is adjacent to the only downstairs bedroom (which is Billy’s bedroom). However, due to the very inadequate space, an extraordinary amount of structural changes will be required. To open the space up for wheelchair turning, the toilet and sink will need to be moved. In addition, an in-wall toilet tank will be needed. This requires breaking the foundation, re-plumbing all fixtures, and restructuring one wall with 2x6 wood framing (to accommodate an in-wall toilet tank). In addition, the doorway will need to be widened and a zero-threshold shower built. We will also need many ADA fixtures for accessibility and safety: wheelchair-accessible sink, grab bars, non-skid flooring, adjustable hand-held shower head, shower bath chair, and wall hanging toilet with bidet.

My DMD Hero is our effort to give back to other families affected by Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy. After getting the diagnosis of Duchenne, we realized how important it is to make the most of the time we have with our boys. Every minute is precious and we believe every Duchenne family should have what they need to live life to its fullest in spite of the difficulties of DMD. We are currently in the initial phases of beginning a foundation that will bless DMD families and give every DMD boy the treatment a hero deserves.
