Grand Rapids, Mich. — In an event that transcends athletics and hits home to most of us, Aquinas College and University of Michigan Health West have organized a Blackout Cancer event to raise money towards the general cancer support fund.

On Saturday, February 8, the Sturrus Sports and Fitness Center will host a Women's and Men's Basketball doubleheader, with AQ hosting Lourdes and the backdrop for the Blackout Cancer Event. Funds from the Blackout Cancer event will benefit UM Health-West's general cancer support fund. This ensures flexibility to address various needs in cancer care, from patient support to innovative treatments. Keeping funds general allows us to use the donations effectively for the greatest impact on the patient. Before the event, there will be an online auction for game-worn jerseys from Aquinas Women and Men and an opportunity to purchase t-shirts for twenty-five dollars. The winner of the auction will have the jersey presented to them after the game by the actual player.

Aquinas Men's Head Coach Ryan Bertoia championed the event, saying, "Cancer has touched and continues to impact so many lives. It's truly special for our team to play for something bigger than themselves—helping to support and give back to those in need. Being able to compete for such a meaningful cause reminds us that sports, when viewed through the right lens, are so much more than just a game."

Having the opportunity to give back to a cause that focuses on resources and education and building stronger communities for those impacted by this disease is an honor that we take seriously," added Aquinas Woman's Coach Brian Morris.

Our team (UM Health-West) is thrilled to partner with Aquinas College because it highlights our longstanding relationship, which dates back to 1993-94. This partnership shows our shared commitment to promoting health, community engagement, and excellence in athletic performance. According to Dr. Edwin Kornoelje, "I am excited about the Blackout Cancer Game as it allows us an opportunity to highlight the AQ/UM Health-West relationship, draw attention to it, and raise funds for the cancer program."

The Blackout Cancer event coincides perfectly with February being National Cancer Prevention Month, which emphasizes prevention and early detection. The Cancer Network of West Michigan showcases combined resources from Trinity Health, Michigan Medicine, and UM Health-West to provide exceptional cancer care.

Aquinas Athletic Director Dr. Ronald D. Reeves said, "In life, we have likely all known someone who has had or been affected by cancer. Throughout my career, I have always made sure to make this a focus, supporting the cause with funds and activities. At AQ, we will be the change. I look forward to the event. The UM Health-West cancer staff and their families will receive free game admission as a gesture of appreciation for their hard work. The February 8th event will also include on-site health screenings (lung, breast, and colorectal) and cancer support group booths.

According to UM Health-West, the inaugural Blackout Cancer Games at Aquinas provide a unique opportunity to:

· Raise awareness about cancer prevention and care.

· Celebrate our partnership with Aquinas College while supporting a cause that deeply impacts our community.

· Highlight the critical connection between physical activity and improved health outcomes, including better tolerance for cancer treatments.
