What is Volt Hockey?

Volt hockey is an adaptive, fast-paced version of hockey played in motorized sports chairs, allowing athletes with physical disabilities to compete at full speed and intensity. It’s often described as hockey meets go-karts, blending the excitement of competition with a level playing field for athletes who are often excluded from traditional sports.

This is more than just a game; it’s a lifeline to community, competition, and camaraderie for children and adults with disabilities. It provides an outlet for athletes to experience teamwork, develop skills, and push their limits in a way that few other sports can.

However, despite its popularity in Scandinavia and Canada, volt hockey remains rare in the U.S., with only two teams nationwide. The team that Carlo Jr. is a part of, founded in 2021, have been at the forefront of growing the sport and have already competed internationally at the Volt Hockey World Cup and the Malmö Open in Sweden.

Why This Matters – A Personal Story

For Carlo Basile Sr., a lifelong Bruins fan, hockey has always been a part of his life. But when his son, Carlo Jr., who has Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy, discovered volt hockey, it changed everything.

“For a long time, I never imagined my son would be able to play a competitive sport, especially not hockey, which means so much to our family,” Carlo Sr. shares. “But now, every week, he counts down the days until practice. He has a team. He has friends who understand him, who share his experiences. Volt hockey has given him something we never thought possible -- a chance to play the game we love, just in a different way.”

Why We Need Your Support

Volt hockey is an expensive sport. The specialized chairs cost $7,500 each, and with so few teams in the U.S., all competition opportunities require international travel. This year, the team will compete in Toronto in May and at the Volt Hockey World Cup in Sweden in September.

Your support will help us cover equipment and travel expenses for players, pay for gym rental fees, and provide stipends for our hardworking coaches -- ensuring that finances are never a barrier for athletes who want to play.
