The story of Salute to Souldiers, Inc. began with a discovery that would deeply impact its mission: the little-known legacy of the Six Triple Eight Battalion. This all-Black, all-female battalion, officially known as the 6888th Central Postal Directory Battalion, was deployed to Europe during World War II to sort and deliver a massive backlog of mail to American soldiers. Their story of resilience and dedication, despite facing racism and segregation, inspired a desire to bring attention to the often-overlooked contributions of veterans of color.

The idea for Salute to Souldiers was further solidified when Stanley Williams, a Navy veteran who served 13 years, met Mr. Jack, a Vietnam War veteran who struggled after his service without access to necessary disability benefits and support. Stanley’s friendship with Mr. Jack showed him firsthand the gaps in care and recognition for veterans of color and older veterans. Mr. Jack’s experiences—and his untimely passing—were a powerful confirmation of the need to create an organization that would support and honor veterans like him.

Salute to Souldiers, Inc. was born from this commitment to uplift and preserve the legacy of veterans of color. The organization strives to address their unique challenges, share their untold stories, and ensure that the sacrifices of veterans from marginalized communities are honored and remembered. By focusing on advocacy, support, and community education, Salute to Souldiers aims to build a future where every veteran’s contribution is valued and no one’s story is left untold.
