Story
We know that community spaces like BSBC have become as essential as they are rare in New Haven and beyond. Bikes are so important in our fight for climate justice, resilience, and redistribution of power. Our community is committed to building an equitable New Haven by getting people on bikes, and we are asking you to invest in our next chapter.
We're aiming to raise $30,000 by the end of the year to put BSBC on the best footing possible and sustain our current programs, pay our new staff members, recycle and repair more bikes, and build a thriving, volunteer-led cooperative space.
Hundreds of free bikes to New Haveners who need them most. Since our founding, we've recycled and donated over 1,400 bikes through our partnerships with Connecticut Mental Health Clinic (CMHC), Integrated Refugee & Immigrant Services (IRIS), and other local organizations. With your support, we will be able to provide affordable, reliable transportation for 300+ people in 2023, start a new donation partnership, and expand our ability to offer low-cost bike maintenance in the shop and around the city.
Our (all new!) staff and thriving volunteer-led community. After seven years, our founder John Martin is stepping back. We’ve hired three amazing people to lead this next chapter alongside a passionate community of volunteer bike mechanics and community creators who help craft BSBC’s programs, maintain the shop, lead rides, and develop partnerships within the city.
Expanded skillshare programs to empower more people with the confidence and knowledge to repair their own bikes. We want everyone to feel empowered to take on bike maintenance projects, assist their friends and family with basic bike repairs, and feel comfortable and prepared to ride their bike further and more often. With additional funding, we will develop more dedicated educational opportunities for community members to learn and practice repairing their own bikes – ranging from fixing a flat to building a bike from scratch.
Cookies. We won’t spend all the money on cookies, but we’ll probably buy some cookies with some of it, because we like cookies, and we like sharing cookies with our volunteers, members and community members.
