About CASA of the Continental Divide

CASA of the Continental Divide (CASACD) is a non-profit that serves child victims of abuse, neglect, and those struggling with issues of truancy in Colorado’s 5^th Judicial District, which encompasses Clear Creek, Eagle, Lake, and Summit Counties.

In 1977, a Seattle juvenile court judge found many children in abuse and neglect cases lacked courtroom representation. This sparked the idea to elect volunteer advocates who spoke on the children’s’ behalf. This program grew into a national network including our own CASA of the Continental Divide, founded in 1999 as a 501(c)3 tax-exempt organization. Originally, CASACD served children in Summit and Eagle counties expanding to Clear Creek and Lake counties in 2000 and 2001. Our truancy advocacy program began in Eagle in 2020, expanded to Clear Creek and Lake counties in 2021, and Summit County in 2023.

CASACD recruits, trains, supervises, and mentors community volunteers to advocate for the best interests of children assigned to our programs in court. CASA volunteers are appointed by judges to be a voice for these children in the courtroom and in the community. Each assigned volunteer advocate conducts independent investigations, is in direct contact with the child, and gets to know the child so they can represent their best interests. In this way the child has a voice in the court, someone on their side during a difficult time that can drastically affect their wellbeing, safety, and future. The desired result is that all children with a CASA be placed in safe, loving homes where they can thrive.
