In Uganda, poverty continues to shape the future of millions of children and families. National and community-level data shows that about 6 out of 10 girls in rural areas face early pregnancy during their teenage years, often leading to school dropout and long-term economic vulnerability. At the same time, around 8 out of 10 children do not achieve basic literacy by the end of primary school, largely due to poverty, limited school support, and household instability. In rural communities like Kalama, these statistics are not just numbers—they are lived experiences. Children walk long distances to school without adequate food or learning materials. Many families struggle to pay school fees on time, forcing children to stay home or drop out entirely. Young mothers often find themselves without education, income, or skills to support their children, deepening the cycle of poverty across generations.

UNDERSTANDING THE SITUATION

In rural communities like Kalama in Uganda, families face daily challenges that directly affect a child’s ability to learn and thrive.Many households depend on small-scale farming or informal work, which often provides inconsistent income. Because of this, basic needs such as school fees, uniforms, books, and daily meals are not always guaranteed.For children, this means education is often interrupted. Some attend school irregularly, while others drop out completely when families are unable to meet basic costs. Over time, this affects literacy levels and long-term opportunities.For girls, the situation is even more vulnerable. 6 in 10 get pregant in the early primary Limited access to education, combined with poverty and social pressures, increases the risk of early pregnancy. When this happens, many young girls leave school permanently and face the responsibility of raising children without skills or financial stability. For families as a whole, food insecurity and limited income make it difficult to plan for the future. Most focus on immediate survival rather than long-term development, which continues the cycle of poverty across generations.

OUR RESPONSE

Rock of Refuge Foundation UG Ltd was established to respond to these challenges through a holistic, community-based approach. We work directly with vulnerable children, young mothers, and families to create long-term pathways out of poverty.
