Douglas Solyan founded Uptown Neon in 1987. His skill and passion for the craft lead him to ending as the last neon man standing, having the last operating neon shop in Richmond. He was loved by many for his brave uniqueness, secretly kind heart, and his expert knowledge in the world of neon.

I am lucky enough to call him my mentor, he taught me nearly all I know about bending neon commercially. To get to continue to honor his legacy through the continuation of Uptown Neon is something I am proud to do. Doug was also a collector, Uptown Neon (on W Cary St.) houses thousands of neon signs that he either made or collected over the years. Highlights from the large portion of the collection of works that he made is what we are looking at for this auction. I believe it is a really beautiful thing that the objects his hands formed can live on, offering us left behind a means of light. Light to guide us to new spaces, to cover us in our homes, and to make us smile.

Neon is a highly specialized field and materials to make neon continue to rise in cost while the number of makers remains relatively low. I say this only because I feel it is important for the industry as well as Doug's memory to share that these prices are fractions of what they would cost if they were custom made today. But my goal here is to get Doug's neon into the hands of people who would appreciate his hard work.

And I think a neon sign is meant to be on, shining bright, surrounded by people. My dream is for Doug's work to be enjoy by you in your home and the spaces you exist in. Thank you to anyone who bids and anyone who is just visiting the show because they miss their friend Doug.
