October 29 · Weinstein Gallery, Los Angeles

In 2016, Liam Kowal was 15 months old. He was in his stroller, in a crosswalk, when a drunk driver hit him. His parents donated his organs so other kids could live. Then they went to work so that no other family would have to live this story. Drunk driving crashes can happen to anyone, any time of the day but every single drunk driving crash is 100% preventable. For over two decades the impaired driving statistics have stalled and even risen. This means for over two decades families have needlessly lost their loved ones.

Pass Liam's Law

California's limit is still .08. Utah moved to .05 in 2019. Most of Europe has been there for decades. Countries that made the switch saw fatal crashes drop by roughly 11 percent. At national scale that is more than 1,700 people a year who get to go home instead.

Your money pays for the unglamorous parts: lobbying days in Sacramento, research briefs for legislators, and the coalition work that gets a bill out of committee instead of leaving it there.

We have done this once before

On February 22, 2019, Assemblymember Autumn Burke introduced AB 1713 in the California Assembly, joined by Assemblymember Heath Flora and Senator Jerry Hill. The bill was called Liam's Law. It would have lowered California's legal blood alcohol limit from .08 to .05.

It got as far as the Public Safety Committee and stopped there. The opposition, mostly restaurant and beverage industry money, was organized and well funded. We were a family with a story.

We are going back in 2027, and this time we are going back with a campaign behind us. That is what October 29 is for.

Liam's Life Foundation has also quietly been part of coalitions and support groups in bringing the .05 bills in other states that include: New York, Washington, Oregon, and Hawaii. It's California's time!

Reach students before the first drink

We bring Liam's story into high school assemblies and driver's ed classrooms, while kids are still forming their opinion about what a couple of drinks means. That is the moment we can make a real impact. This is especially important for risky events like, holiday parties and prom.
