Every photographer remembers the moment when it all finally clicked. The moment you moved past luck and mastered your craft -- when you had the gear you needed, the technology felt like an extension of your eye, and your vision finally met your technical skill.

We love seeing student photojournalists have these moments. But today, that moment is hard to reach for many of our students. The technology gap creates a silent barrier in scholastic and collegiate educational programs. While some students already own cameras, many others with immense talent and a passion for photojournalism cannot afford the rising costs of professional equipment. Students may also need to manage costs for access to software, storage, and the other hardware.

We’re on a mission to close that gap, starting with students here in Michigan. All proceeds will be dedicated to the purchase of essential photography equipment needed to give students the technology they need to succeed in visual journalism careers and make classroom instruction more efficient for all students. Students at the middle and high school levels will be able to access this equipment to explore photojournalism at the MIPA Summer Journalism Workshop at MSU and MSU students will be able to borrow from this equipment pool for their coursework and projects.

This year, our auction features beautiful images from Michigan State University's current students and alumni, and includes key shots. This auction was made possible by a collaboration between the Media Photography & Technology faculty at Michigan State University, the Michigan Interscholastic Press Association, and The State News.
