Story

We created the MTG TBI and Epilepsy foundation in our beloved Michael’s name. Michael’s story is one of individual recovery followed by an untimely death. Our family has combined our resources and along with our board members, we are attempting to make a difference in the field of traumatic brain injury and epilepsy awareness, prevention, and treatment. Ours is a story of courage, love, hope, and faith.

At the age of thirteen, in the winter of 2003, Michael Goulet endured a traumatic brain injury secondary to a snowmobile accident. He was transported via life flight to Eastern Maine Medical Center where he underwent immediate brain surgery. Michael miraculously survived. Recovery included weeks in a coma, months of intensive rehabilitation, and years of further medical care.

Two years post trauma Michael developed a seizure disorder despite continued medical treatment. It was not an easy road for him, requiring frequent visits to the neurologist, further testing, hospitalizations, and daily psychotropic medication administration.

For Michael, the onset of his seizures was a catalyst that appeared to strengthen his faith, and force him to persevere harder. He continued on with an unimaginable amount of strength, courage, and even grace. Finding his spiritual journey, Michael visited nursing homes, volunteered in soup kitchens, and became involved in ministry work. As a Psychology Major at St. Joseph’s College in Windham, Maine Michael’s hope was to continue on with a Graduate Program. He wanted to help individuals with struggles similar to his. If anyone could have solely found a cure for Epilepsy, we believe Michael could have.

On October 6, 2010 Michael suffered his last Grand Mal seizure. He passed away from complications at Maine Medical Center on October 14th, 2010. We started this Non Profit Organization in Michael’s memory as a way to keep his intentions alive and eternal. We hope that through the work we accomplish, families with circumstances like his and ours might have a chance for a miraculous outcome. It is our mission to provide funding for Brain Injury and Seizure Disorder Research, aid in the form of Scholarships, and financial assistance for eligible families. Awareness, prevention and improved treatment for Seizure Disorders and Brain Injuries are our hope, and we believe where hope grows miracles blossom.

Our fundraising efforts have been focused around prevention, and education in the form of multisport helmet donations to children and adults across the state of Maine. To date we have properly fit and donated over 15,000 helmets with our Love Your Brain custom logo. Our custom trailer allows us to transport our efforts to local town events, and municipalities outreach efforts. We are proud to partner with our surrounding communities in making sure that each child has a helmet to protect their brain from injury.

All of our fundraising efforts directly support our important and life changing initiatives, we thank you in advance for joining in our mission.
