Nursing Cap, Inc. was founded in 2013 by Regina McKinney—now Dr. McKinney, a nurse anesthetist with over 36 years of healthcare experience—who envisioned a program that would give youth direct access to mentoring, tutoring, and career development opportunities in healthcare and STEM fields. Officially incorporated as a 501(c)(3) in 2015, the program meets twice a month from September through June at Sentara Obici Hospital, immersing students in an environment that reflects their future goals.

From the beginning, all services have been provided free of charge, supported by community donations and grants that make possible tutoring, meals, college tours, scholarships, and more. Open to students across Hampton Roads and surrounding areas, Nursing Cap, Inc. has now celebrated ten graduating cohorts and impacted hundreds of youth—half of whom have gone on to careers in healthcare.

What started as a small mentoring initiative has grown into a proven pipeline of opportunity, equipping young people with the academic support, exposure, and confidence to thrive in healthcare and STEM careers while shaping the next generation of leaders.
