September is Childhood Cancer Awareness Month.

Across the country, gold ribbons will appear in windows, on social media, at events, and throughout our communities. They are symbols of awareness, solidarity, remembrance, and hope. But at Kiona Foundation, we believe a ribbon should ask something more of us.

Who does it represent?

Behind every ribbon is a name.

Behind every name is a child, a family, a story, and a life that is about so much more than cancer. That is why this September, Kiona Foundation is bringing our community together through One Ribbon, One Movement. This is more than a month of awareness. It is an invitation to turn awareness into understanding, understanding into action, and individual acts of support into a movement capable of carrying this work forward.

Childhood cancer is more than a diagnosis. When a child is diagnosed with cancer, treatment becomes part of life. But treatment is not the whole life.

There is still school. Friendships. Family. Birthdays. Play. Dreams. Milestones. Ordinary afternoons.

The experiences that make childhood, childhood.

Cancer can reach into all of them.

That is the idea behind More Than Treatment, Kiona Foundation’s awareness campaign running as part of One Ribbon, One Movement. Treatment is part of the story. Childhood is the whole picture. Throughout Childhood Cancer Awareness Month, we are asking people to see that whole picture.

To see the child beyond the diagnosis.

To recognize the family navigating life around it.

To understand why research matters.

And to help us build a community committed to doing more.

Who is Kiona Foundation?

Kiona Foundation is a nonprofit organization committed to advancing meaningful work for children and families affected by childhood cancer while supporting research, education, awareness, and community engagement. We believe compassion and science belong in the same conversation. We believe families deserve to be seen as more than statistics. We believe research should be approached responsibly, with evidence before claims and progress before promises. And we believe meaningful change requires more than one organization, one researcher, one donor, or one community. It requires all of us.

Our work brings together people who may enter this mission from very different places, including families, advocates, researchers, institutions, businesses, community organizations, volunteers, and individual supporters.

One Ribbon, One Movement is where those paths meet.

Why One Ribbon, One Movement?

The gold ribbon is the recognized symbol of childhood cancer awareness. But there is a danger in allowing any symbol to become so familiar that we stop seeing the people behind it. One Ribbon, One Movement is Kiona Foundation’s effort to put the person back at the center of the ribbon.

Because a ribbon is not a child.

A statistic is not a child.

A diagnosis is not a child.

A child has a name.

And every name carries a story worth recognizing.

Throughout this campaign, we want each ribbon to represent something personal.

A child.

A survivor.

Someone being remembered.

A family.

A researcher.

A supporter.

A reason for believing that we can do more together than any of us can do alone.

One ribbon may begin with one person.

Thousands of ribbons can become a movement. Awareness should lead somewhere.

September gives childhood cancer a national spotlight. Our responsibility is to make that attention matter.

One Ribbon, One Movement is designed to move through a simple progression:

We tell the stories.

We help more people understand that childhood cancer is More Than Treatment and that its impact can reach far beyond medical care. We bring people together. Through awareness, community engagement, partnerships, research connections, and Kiona’s September activities, we create opportunities for people and organizations to become part of the movement. We turn awareness into action. Support generated through this campaign helps move Kiona Foundation’s mission and research work forward.

We make participation personal.

Through Every Ribbon Has a Name, supporters can connect their participation to a name and a story, creating something that can be carried and shared beyond the moment of giving. And when September ends, our mission does not. Because childhood cancer does not take a month off. Neither do we.

Why research matters

Families affected by childhood cancer deserve more than good intentions. They deserve rigorous questions.

Responsible science.

Better evidence.

Researchers willing to investigate what we do not yet understand.

Institutions willing to collaborate.

Communities willing to support that work.

And organizations willing to distinguish hope from promises.

At Kiona Foundation, our approach is grounded in a simple principle:

Evidence before claims. Research before promises. Children and families at the center.

Research does not always provide immediate answers. It can be difficult, methodical work. It requires infrastructure, scientific collaboration, responsible study operations, data collection and analysis, and a willingness to follow evidence wherever it leads. But meaningful progress has to begin somewhere.

This campaign helps us keep moving.

Our goal this September

We are asking our community to come together around a shared goal:

This is not about pretending that one donation can guarantee a scientific breakthrough.

It cannot. It is about what becomes possible when many people decide that rigorous research is worth supporting. A gift from one person joins a gift from another. A family joins a business. A community organization joins a researcher. A research institution joins a supporter who may have only discovered Kiona today.

Different people.

Different reasons for participating.

One shared movement.

There is a place for you in this movement. You do not need to be a scientist to believe in research. You do not need to have experienced childhood cancer personally to stand beside families who have. You do not need to make the largest gift to make your participation meaningful.

One Ribbon, One Movement was built around the opposite idea.

Every person can add something.
