Who We Are:

Outer Banks Wildlife Shelter (OWLS) is a non-profit wildlife shelter where injured, sick, and orphaned native North Carolina wildlife is cared for in a professional and compassionate manner.

The mission of Outer Banks Wildlife Shelter, Inc. is to rescue, rehabilitate and release distressed North Carolina wildlife, by providing medical care and emergency response rehabilitation and to educate our local communities by inspiring proactive engagement in wildlife conservation efforts.

We envision establishing a cutting-edge facility focused on wildlife rehabilitation, rescue, and education. This initiative aims to manage the growing influx of distressed, orphaned, and injured wildlife, and to profoundly influence our community by raising awareness about the significance of wildlife conservation

OWLS receives no county, state or federal funding and relies on the donations from the public, corporate and foundation supporters to achieve our mission.

OWLS was founded in 1988 . Volunteers help to transport ill, injured or abandoned animals from nearby beaches, backyards, or other public areas. OWLS services multiple counties and we seek other animal lovers to help support the growing need for animal rescue in our area. We partner with other non-profits, individuals and government agencies to help animals as quickly and safely as possible. 2024 is a year of change and growth as we make plans to renovate cages, clean the facility, and improve animal welfare. We invite you to volunteer with us making a difference in the community.

What We Do:

Education - OWLS provides valuable educational outreach to classrooms and local community events to connect people to nature and wildlife.

Rehabilitation - OWLS rescues small mammals, birds, reptiles, and amphibians if they are injured or orphaned and need human care. Our priority is animal welfare.

Release - Every effort is made to release animals back into their natural habitat once they have been rescued and rehabilitated.
