Something happens when neighbors plant together.

It starts with a neglected yard — maybe a bare strip of wire grass along a fence line, a forgotten front yard, a community lot that's been overlooked for years. Then someone shows up with a flat of native plants, cardboard, compost, and a pair of gloves. Once planted, another neighbor comes out to see what's going on. Then a kid asks what the yellow flower is called. Then someone's grandmother says she remembers that plant from back home.

That's how a garden becomes a community.

DC Natives is a volunteer-led nonprofit working across Washington, DC to install native pollinator gardens — especially in the neighborhoods that DC's green investment has too often passed by. We plant milkweed and monarda and hyssop and black-eyed Susan, not just because pollinators need them, but because our communities deserve them.

Every garden we install becomes a gathering point. A conversation starter. A reason for neighbors who've rarely talked to learn each other's names as they exchange tips and cuttings and seeds. And over time, those gardens connect into something larger — a pollinator pathway, a greener ward, a neighborhood that looks and feels cared for because the people in it are caring for it together.

This Pollinator Week, we're raising funds to keep planting. Your gift goes directly to native plants, garden installations, and community workshops across DC, with a focus on Anacostia River communities.
