Our Story:

Born and raised in the DMV metropolitan area, Ama and Chris Law are co-founders and co-directors of Project ChArma, and have been dancing together since high school. Together, their expertise reflects the expanse of their training in a wide range of movement styles and foundations. Both Ama and Chris completed undergraduate and graduate studies from the University of Maryland College Park (UMCP), both receiving MFAs in Dance and Choreography.

This year, Project ChArma became awardees of the Kennedy Center’s Local Dance Commissioning Project to support their artistic and professional advancement. As awardees, Project ChArma is developing a production titled Chronicles of Nina...What now?, a work that explores the process of living on in the wake of death and examines the longing to establish an everlasting connection with our ancestors. Just as Nina Simone harnessed funk, soul, and classical techniques, the work meshes multiple street and modern-based movement styles as a form of release and as a bridging point for viewers to find release as well.

Our team is planning a fantastic fundraising event to ensure this production comes to life, so get excited! We are hosting the Project ChArma Auction and Cocktail Hour on Saturday February 17, 2024 from 4-7pm at the Silver Spring Civic Center. We cannot wait to see you there!

Why we need YOUR help:

DC has a diverse dance scene filled with innovative thinkers from many disciplines. Sometimes presenters do not place the hip hop genre at a high value in comparison to ballet or modern dance productions. Please help us contribute to the growth of our voice, the voices of these young artists and artists of color so that our local artists can feel inspired to continue working.

It's important to compensate the people who are working hard along with us to make this production happen. Your contributions will support our collaborators who have worked hard to create designs for this project. You will make it possible to support our performers who provide both physical and mental inspiration, continuing to fuel this creative process.

However, our journey doesn't end here. We are also embarking on an incredible opportunity: presenting and conducting choreographic research in Brazil this summer. This endeavor holds immense potential for fostering transnational exchange across the African Diaspora and expanding the horizons of our artistic exploration.
