Every few months, Theodore undergoes brain MRIs and blood tests. We're watching, waiting, hoping he remains asymptomatic. But hope alone isn't enough. We won't sit on the sidelines while this disease threatens our son and so many others.
The stakes couldn't be higher. In its most severe form, cerebral ALD can cause devastating brain damage in young boys. While stem cell transplants can stop progression, they can't reverse existing damage—and they don't prevent other potential symptoms in the spinal cord and adrenal glands. They're also very risky procedures.
