ABOUT US

Guardians of Flushing Bay (GoFB) serves as a critical steward of Flushing Waterways' (Flushing Bay and Flushing Creek) challenged, yet flourishing ecosystems. Since forming in 2015 as a coalition of dragon boaters advocating for the health of and access to Flushing Bay, GoFB has evolved into an environmental justice organization with a shared vision of a healthy and equitably accessible Flushing Waterways.

To achieve our goals, we build community power by:

sustaining and building grassroots coalitions of local organizations and residents
bonding residents with the plants and animals of their local ecosystem
repairing wetland habitats and restoring our shorelines
fostering a network of environmental volunteers (you!)

In all our work, we strive to connect and engage local watershed communities with the greatest barriers to accessing a healthy environment.

SATURBAY

On October 21st from 12-4pm, join GoFB for our second annual community-centric fundraiser, SaturBAY. The theme this year is 'The Water is Calling'—a call to action, a call to play and a call to celebrate. There will be music from DJ Rekha, free food from local restaurants, boating tours with local dragon boat teams, a biking tutorial with Bike NY, a 5k Fun Run, art workshops, and more! Entrance and activities are FREE with registration. Donations are encouraged, but not required.

Note on the weather: This is a rescheduled rain date from the originally scheduled Saturday, September 23rd event. There will be no new rain date. Please stay tuned for details in the event of inclement weather.

WHY GIVE TO GOFB

GoFB has always been sustained by our local communities and park users. Whether that be water quality sampling, organizing for land use equity, installing oyster cages, cleaning up the shoreline or fundraising—we could not take care of our local waters without you. This year, GoFB needs your support now more than ever. From Mets owner Steve Cohen’s proposal to take over 50 acres of parkland to build a casino, to the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers’ proposal for a Flushing Creek storm gate, to a federally funded resilience study for Flushing Meadows Corona Park, proposed projects and policies across the waterfront have the potential to forever alter Flushing Waterways. In the midst of this potential change, GoFB sustains grassroots coalitions, manages community science initiatives and organizes public education campaigns so that the proposed investments result in the ecologically just future that our communities and ecologies deserve.

The water is calling—join us as we answer the call together!

HOW TO GET THERE

Use this map for help getting to the FMCP public boat launch via walking or biking from Mets-Willets Point and Flushing Main Street, or see below for directions.

Coming from the Mets-Willets Point 7 Train station:

Exit the train on the Citi Field side.
Enter the Citi Field gate and walk along the sidewalk next to Citi Field, keeping the stadium to your immediate right.
Exit Citi Field onto Boat Basin Pl.
Cross Shea Rd and walk under the highway overpass.
Carefully cross Marina Rd (there are no pedestrian lights) to get to the Promenade. At this point, you should see the Candela Structures nearby/ahead.
Turn right onto the Promenade and walk until you reach the public kayak/canoe launch. It is about a 10-minute walk at a moderate pace.

Coming from the Flushing Main Street 7 Train station:

Head North on Main Street toward Northern Blvd.
Cross Northern Blvd and turn left onto it—you want to walk on the North side of the Blvd.
Follow the Northern Blvd sidewalk until it reaches the bridge. Find the path to the Pedestrian bridge located on the far right side of the Northern Blvd bridge (entrance is across the street from Chun Fook Funeral Services). The Pedestrian bridge is named "Flushing Bay Promenade" on Google Maps.
Walk along the Pedestrian bridge and follow it to the pedestrian crosswalk located at the end.
Cross the crosswalk and turn left onto the Promenade.
Follow the promenade past the DOT site and keep walking until you reach the public kayak/canoe launch.

QUIÉNES SOMOS

Guardians of Flushing Bay (GoFB) sirve como una importante organización que vela por los ecosistemas -con sus desafíos, pero florecientes- del Litoral de Flushing (Flushing Bay y Flushing Creek). Desde su Fundación en 2015 como coalición de aficionados de barcas dragón en defensa de la salud y el acceso a Flushing Bay, GoFB se ha desarrollado a ser una organización de justicia ambiental con una visión común de un entorno saludable y de acceso equitativo a las aguas de Flushing.

Para lograr nuestros objetivos, desarrollamos el poder de la comunidad mediante:

construir y apoyar coaliciones de base de residentes y organizaciones locales
desarrollar vínculos entre los residentes y las plantas y animales de su ecosistema local
restaurar los hábitats de los humedales y nuestras costas
fomentar una red de voluntarios medioambientales (¡como usted!)

SATURBAY

La entrada es GRATIS si se registra. Le animamos a hacer donaciones, pero no son obligatorias.

Nota sobre el clima: Este evento se aplazó por la lluvia, la fecha original era el sábado 23 de septiembre. No se volverá a aplazar. Manténgase atento según se aproxime el evento en caso de mal tiempo.

¿POR QUÉ DONAR A GOFB?

GoFB siempre ha existido con el apoyo de nuestras comunidades locales y usuarios del parque. Ya sea recogiendo muestras para medir la calidad del agua, organizándonos por la equidad en el uso de los espacios, instalando jaulas de ostras, limpiando de basura las orillas o recaudando fondos—no podríamos cuidar de nuestras aguas locales sin usted. Este año, GoFB necesita su apoyo más que nunca. Desde la propuesta del dueño de los Mets, Steve Cohen, de apoderarse de más de 50 acres de área del parque para construir un casino, a la propuesta de U.S. Army Corps of Engineers de una compuerta contra inundaciones en Flushing Creek, a un estudio financiado por el gobierno federal sobre la resiliencia en Flushing Meadows Corona Park, proyectos y políticas propuestos para el litoral que tienen el potencial de alterar Flushing Waterways para siempre. CÓMO LLEGAR

Use este mapa como guía para llegar al embarcadero público de FMCP, caminando o en bicileta desde Mets-Willets Point y Flushing Main Street, o lea las siguientes instrucciones.

Desde la estación de Mets-Willets Point (tren 7):

Salga por el lado de Citi Field.
Entre por la puerta de Citi Field y camine por la acera junto a Citi Field, mantenga el estadio a su derecha.
Salga de Citi Field a Boat Basin Pl.
Cruce Shea Rd y camine bajo la carretera elevada.
Cruce Marina Rd con cuidado (no hay semáforos de cruce de peatonal) para llegar al Promenade. Al llegar aquí, debería ver Candela Structures cerca/hacia el frente.
Vire a la derecha para acceder al Promenade y camine hasta llegar al embarcadero público de kayaks/canoas.

Desde la estación de Flushing Main Street (tren 7):

Camine hacia el Norte por Main Street hacia Northern Blvd.
Cruce Northern Blvd y vire a la izquierda por Northern Blvd.—hay que caminar por la acera Norte.
Siga la acera de Northern Blvd hasta que llegue al puente. Tome el camino que lleva al Puente Peatonal ubicado en el extremo derecho del puente de Northern Blvd (Chun Fook Funeral Services está directamente al otro lado de la calle, frente a la entrada). El Puente Peatonal se llama "Flushing Bay Promenade" en Google Maps.
Camine por el Puente Peatonal y sígalo hasta el cruce peatonal al final.
Cruce y vire a la izquierda para tomar el Promenade.
Continue por el Promenade, pasando el sitio de DOT y siga hasta llegar al embarcadero público de kayaks/canoas.
