The Doug Schutte Memorial Fund

Doug Schutte (1975–2023) was the founder and visionary behind the Bardstown Theatre, now known as The Bard. A beloved teacher, coach, and director, Doug wrote The Bard’s signature productions The Kings of Christmas and Chasing Ophelia, and created the annual Ten-Tucky festival to showcase short works by Kentucky playwrights.

After it opened in 2010, The Bard quickly became a creative force in Louisville—equal parts irreverent, experimental, and essential. Part restaurant, part theater, and part community clubhouse, it gave artists a place to stretch, fail, risk, and grow. Its commitment to new work—especially by Kentucky playwrights—filled a gap in the city’s cultural ecosystem and earned a fiercely loyal following.

Doug’s unexpected death in 2023 came during a moment of profound transition for The Bard. In the years since, a dedicated group of volunteers and artists has carried his vision forward, affirming the beliefs Doug held deeply: that Louisville needs experimental theater, artists need space to take risks, audiences deserve to encounter new work, and the entire community needs a chance to connect, on and off stage.
