I was diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease (PD) in 2022, after years of strange and difficult symptoms. As a naturopathic physician, I’ve always had high expectations for my health—so hearing I had a progressive, incurable disease in my mid-50s was a shock. A specialist told me I’d “die with it, not of it…see you in a year.” Not exactly comforting.
While there’s no cure yet, I’m determined to live well with Parkinson’s—and to help provide the research and resources to improve the lives and symptoms of those of us with PD. I also help fund the research that could one day prevent or reverse it [y’all might see my involvement over the years in Michael J Fox Foundation].
Exercise is key to our journey. Not just any kind, though—Parkinson’s demands physical, social, and mentally engaging movement. That’s what led me to Rock Steady Boxing, back to tennis, and, unexpectedly, into the world of rock climbing.
Climbing challenges my balance, focus, strength, and adaptability. It’s playful and humbling—and it's working. I’m already seeing improvements. I still box, dance, bike, run, and play racket sports—but nothing moves my body quite like this.
