About us:

For over 140 years, South-View has preserved the stories of Atlanta’s black community. Visitors to South-View can see the resting places of influential leaders who shaped Atlanta’s history, including educators, activists, and business owners whose stories continue to inspire people today.

The cemetery holds deep ties to the family of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. While he was later moved to the King Center, many of his relatives remain at South-View. Their presence reflects something often forgotten. The struggle for civil rights was carried by entire families and generations, not just one leader.

Horace Mann Bond rests here, a groundbreaking educator who spent his life challenging racist ideas about intelligence and expanding opportunities for Black students. His work changed how people understood education and inequality in America.

Grace Towns Hamilton rests here as well. She became the first Black woman elected to the Georgia General Assembly and spent decades fighting for fair housing, jobs, and civil rights for the people of Atlanta.

These are some of the many stories of people who taught, organized, and pushed Atlanta forward. These stories are part of the city’s foundation. However, many sections of the cemetery require restoration and preservation to ensure these legacies are not lost. The Praise House Project helps bring attention to South-View’s cultural significance through storytelling, public programming, and community engagement.
