At the Squires Volunteer Fire Department, we operate on a lean budget funded entirely by optional member dues and donations. These dues cover the essentials—fuel, lights, and insurance—but leave very little for the upgrades required to keep our community safe. We continually pursue grants, which helps a lot, but grants will never cover 100% of our needs.

The Challenge of 2025

Last year’s intense wildland fire season pushed our volunteer crew and our aging fleet to the limit. During a mutual aid response to a structure fire, our 1987 pumper suffered a terminal transmission failure. While insurance provided a settlement, it wasn't enough to replace what we lost in today's market where a new fire engine can cost $1M.

Our Strategy: Proficiency Over "Newness"

We take pride in maintaining older equipment and training relentlessly. We believe that knowing how to use a tool effectively is more important than having the newest one on the market. However, even the best-trained firefighter needs a truck that can get to the scene and the right hose to put out the fire.

A Major Leap Forward

After months of searching and negotiating, we’ve secured two massive upgrades for Squires:

A "New-to-Us" Pumper: Sourced from New York, this truck offers significantly better capacity and safety features than our retired 1987 model.
A used 2,500-Gallon Tanker: A critical addition for our rural area where hydrants don’t exist, ensuring we bring our own water to the fight.

Why Your Bid Matters Today

We have the trucks, but they are currently "empty shells." To put them into service, we must outfit them with:

Expensive fire hoses; even sections of small diameter hose are around $200 each
Adapters, fittings, and vital life-saving tools.
Mounting hardware to keep equipment secure and accessible.

100% of the proceeds from this auction go directly toward outfitting these two rigs. When you bid, you are directly helping us get these trucks out of the station and onto your road.
