A K-12 private microschool in St. Louis, MO, Saint Louis Sudbury School offers Self-Directed Education in a supportive learning community. Without grades, tests, or homework, students have the time and space to pursue their interests, develop lifelong communication and decision-making skills, discover who they are, connect with people of all ages, explore challenging ideas, and help run the school community. Saint Louis Sudbury School prioritizes young people's well-being, self-awareness, ability to connect with those around them, happiness, and agility to adapt and innovate in a changing world.

Although our tuition is only a fraction of what most independent schools in St. Louis charge, nearly 70% of our families require Saint Louis Sudbury School tuition assistance. Also, 55% of our students qualify for free or reduced lunch. Please help support our school’s tuition assistance program so that more young people can experience the benefits of a Saint Louis Sudbury School experience.

Our school community thrives and truly still exists today because of the incredible generosity of in-kind contributions (donated services and goods), dedicated volunteers and parents, gifts from individual donors and community partners, and advice and research from the many staff of Sudbury inspired model schools around the world. Thank you for your generosity!

The Need and Goals

The majority of K-12 school options in the St. Louis region are conventional educational settings found in public schools, private schools, and parochial schools. They are largely driven by a required curriculum, tests, grades, and homework; a hierarchy where adults are authority figures rather than collaborators; the separation of students by age; few options for personal choice and agency; the prioritization of productivity, achievement, and extrinsic rewards; and an assumption that following specific instructions and requirements before the age of 18 results in a direct pathway to college, graduate school, jobs, family, and lifetime success and happiness. In essence, conventional school options tend to focus on living for the future rather than living in the present.

For some young people, these educational settings create immense anxiety, stress, and mental health conditions, so much that they struggle to go to school at all, let alone be in a state of mind to learn and to grow. Typically, when children and their parents struggle in conventional school environments, they are told that they are the problem and often attempts to “fix” the child are not “good enough.” Parents and their children feel guilt and shame about not “measuring up” and are stuck on what to do. The idea that perhaps the educational system is not a good fit for a child may or may not come up in the many IEP/ISP meetings or parent teacher conferences. For many of these families, homeschooling or unschooling at home is not an accessible or desirable option. In the end, these young people who are bright and immensely capable of learning and growth do not have a place to thrive. Being in a conventional school system perpetuates an ongoing sense of failure and not fitting in and weighs heavily on these young people and erodes their confidence.

Saint Louis Sudbury School seeks to offer a welcoming learning environment for young people ages 5 to 18 and their families, from a wide range of economic backgrounds, who want to practice Self-Directed Education within a supportive community and are ready to step outside of conventional school options in the St. Louis region. We seek students and families who are open to seeing education as everything people come to know in order to live their lives. At Saint Louis Sudbury School, learning is life and life is learning.

Our ongoing goals are to nurture young people who may not fit into the conventional school settings on their journey towards independence; listen to, support, and challenge them to become better humans while trusting themselves; foster their curiosity, discernment, honesty, and critical thinking; guide them as they pursue their interests; and develop a school community where individuals feel that they are valued and have opportunities to add value to those around them. We also seek to offer this unique educational opportunity to families who cannot afford the majority of private school options in the St. Louis region by prioritizing needs-based tuition assistance as part of who we are. We must fundraise all tuition assistance dollars given to families.
