At Urban Nature Partners PDX, we’ve seen how small, grassroots efforts can create some of the most meaningful changes. When young people connect with nature, it helps them grow not only as individuals, but also within their communities.

As a small organization, we have the ability to form deep, personal connections with the youth and families we work with. This flexibility allows us to create welcoming spaces where everyone feels supported and inspired. By introducing our new small group model this year for our older youth—one mentor and three early teen mentees—we ensure that each participant receives the attention they need to build confidence and discover their potential. The trust and sense of belonging that come from these small groups can be hard to find in larger programs.

What sets us apart even more from larger programs is our family-inclusive approach. We believe that nature is something that should be enjoyed by everyone, across generations. Whether it’s mentoring multiple siblings within a family or inviting parents to join in on outdoor activities, we create moments that bring families together. These shared experiences don’t just create memories—they often open doors to new opportunities, like exploring careers in the environmental field.

We’re also committed to building long-term partnerships with culturally-specific and BIPOC-led organizations. By working closely with these partners, we ensure that our programs are accessible and responsive to the unique needs of each community. This helps us create safe, inclusive spaces where young people feel connected and see themselves reflected in their mentors and program leaders.

What really stands out, though, are the long-term relationships we build with our youth, lasting up to six years, and longer with entire families. These connections provide lasting support that helps young people stay connected to nature and their communities. We’ve seen how youth take what they’ve learned and share it with their friends and family, creating a ripple effect that strengthens the entire community.
