The Wheelhouse Creative Education Center is a preschool, summer camp, and educational organization that operates on a sliding scale, geared towards providing programming for children of all income levels from throughout Greene County.

The Wheelhouse was originally founded by a group of five parents dreaming of a loving, mutually supportive, world-opening community for their children and themselves. As their children played on and around them, they laid the groundwork for an educational organization guided by the principles of social justice, land stewardship and joy. We opened the doors of our preschool program in October 2015 in a renovated barn, surrounded by sunflowers and acres of forest. When the pandemic hit in 2020, we pivoted to meet the needs of our community and expanded our offerings to include fully-outdoor and masked Forest School classes, all while relocating from our original spot in Catskill to Cairo. Since then, our core program — Community School — has made its home in the community building of a former resort on Main Street Cairo, where children absorb the sense of pleasure and relaxation in nature from days gone by.

We're now moving again, but this time to our forever home, a beautiful site with plenty of forest to explore in Acra. Your donation will directly support the costs of this move and contribute to our sliding scale fund so we can continue serving low income families. Supporting the Wheelhouse also means shaping the lifelong outcomes of the children who attend these programs, and helping to develop responsible future community members for Greene County. Join us for our summer party on August 19th from 2-5pm at our new location at 5599 Route 23, Acra. We'll have FREE ice cream, lots of fun activities for kids, and live music. You'll also have the opportunity to support the Wheelhouse through our bake sale or our silent auction; all proceeds will go directly to support the Wheelhouse's move, sliding scale tuition, and programming for Greene County families throughout the year.
