Our Story: A Legacy of Love, Leadership, and Liberation

For over three decades, OPALGA+ (Oak Park Area Lesbian and Gay Association Plus) has been a beacon of advocacy, inclusion, and community in Oak Park and the surrounding areas. Founded during a time when LGBTQ+ voices were often pushed to the margins, OPALGA+ emerged as a powerful force for visibility, equity, and change—bringing neighbors together to affirm that love is love, and everyone deserves to thrive.

What began as a grassroots effort has grown into a vital community organization, advocating for justice, supporting LGBTQ+ youth, and fostering intergenerational connection. Our annual Gala is not just a celebration—it’s a powerful reflection of who we are and what we believe. It’s an evening where stories are shared, lives are honored, and futures are funded.

Each year, the OPALGA+ Gala raises critical funds for our Scholarship Program, which supports the next generation of LGBTQ+ leaders and allies as they pursue higher education and personal growth. Our scholarships are more than financial support—they are acts of affirmation for young people who are often navigating the world with courage and resilience.

Since 2014, we've awarded $288,000 in scholarships to LGBTQIA2S+ students and their dedicated allies. In 2025, we're proud to award a record-breaking $60,000, with a $100,000 budget already approved for 2026. To reach these ambitious goals and continue expanding our impact, we need your help.

This year, we gather in the breathtaking Garfield Park Conservatory for the 2025 Gala—an evening of elegance, connection, and celebration. Surrounded by beauty, community, and purpose, we’ll raise our glasses to the progress we've made and recommit to the work ahead.
