The Walt Whitman High School Class of 1982 is sponsoring the 2026 Carter Work Project to celebrate the 50th Anniversary of Habitat for Humanity, as well as America 250 which seeks to renew our commitment to the ideals of our democracy.
On this 44th year since our Whitman graduation, our campaign and related activities are a Reunion with a Purpose that celebrates all forms of humanitarian work and philanthropy by our classmates. The Carter presidential years were part of our high school experience, and we wish to honor and join the legacy of Jimmy and Rosalynn Carter, by helping to make home ownership possible for 24 families in Atlanta this year. The Carters first volunteered with Habitat for Humanity in 1984 on a project in NYC and continued this work for the rest of their lives. We share their view that home ownership should be achieveable, not just a privilege. Through partnerships, sweat equity, and low or no interest loans, housing can be affordable and it can transform lives. It may seem odd that we are concentrating our efforts to support a community so far away from our home town of Bethesda, Maryland, but we as a class view this country as our community.
