The Liberty Bell and the Lehigh Valley: Ringing in a World Without Hunger

An iconic and enduring image, the Liberty Bell has served as an important

symbol throughout our nation’s 250 year history. Beginning with the fight

for American independence in the 1770s and continuing with the

decades-long Abolitionist, Women’s Suffrage, and Civil Rights Movements

of the 19th and 20th Centuries, the Liberty Bell still inspires the fight for

freedom, justice, and equality around the world to this day.

OurOur design celebrates the lasting legacy of this proud American icon and its

direct connection to our very own Lehigh Valley. Did you know the Liberty

Bell was hidden away in Allentown at Zion’s Reformed Church to safeguard

it from British capture? Along the route from Philadelphia, it passed through

Bethlehem, where the wheel of one of the wagons transporting it was

repaired by the Moravians.

OurOur design pairs the American flag on one side with the historic Easton City

flag on the other, commemorating the first public reading of the Declaration

of Independence in Centre Square on July 8, 1776.

Today, we want the Liberty Bell to represent hope for those experiencing

food insecurity in our community. Just as we have rallied behind this symbol

in the past, now is our opportunity to unite with our neighbors and friends

to support those around us and fight hunger together! As a well-known

musical taught us, “Do not throw away your shot!”
