Reclaiming our Neighborhood, Growing our Roots

Immigrant communities have always existed within a solidarity economy. It’s time for a women run, immigrant run, transnational movement-aligned Solidarity Economy Headquarters.

El Centro Cooperativo de Desarrollo y Solidaridad (CCDS) is an immigrant-founded and led organization building an ecosystem of immigrant-owned worker cooperatives in East Boston. CCDS was founded in 2016 after a group of Latino immigrant residents who met together in a neighborhood church to discuss economic alternatives for their community in the face of the rapid gentrification and displacement from their neighborhood. Drawing on their collective experience of cooperativism in their home countries, they launched CCDS. Today, CCDS has seven cooperatives in its ecosystem ranging across sectors, from childcare, eldercare and cleaning, to catering, interpretation, sewing and handyman service. Together, these cooperatives are a part of a community united by values of mutual aid and solidarity.

Many of CCDS' cooperatives are ready to open their doors, but prices in the neighborhood to rent space are untenable for the community. Owning a building in the heart of East Boston will allow CCDS to provide affordable spaces for cooperatives who need physical space, such as daycare space for a childcare coop and commercial kitchens a catering coop, while establishing a community owned and governed asset in the neighborhood. Value will not be siphoned out through rent payments to a landlord but reinvested into the community that generated it. Such a space will serve as a center for the community to gather and plan its future, much like the neighborhood church did for the original founders of CCDS in 2015.
