Why We Celebrate August

August is more than just another month.

It is National Breastfeeding Month—a time to recognize the profound impact breastfeeding has on the health and well-being of children, parents, and communities. It is also home to Black Breastfeeding Week, a national observance created to bring attention to persistent racial disparities in breastfeeding, maternal health, access to care, and representation within the lactation field.

These observances remind us that breastfeeding is both a deeply personal journey and a public health issue. They also remind us that while breastfeeding deserves to be celebrated, access to quality lactation support cannot be taken for granted.

We don't celebrate August because the work is finished. We celebrate because the work is worth continuing.

That is why The Obsidian Milk Collective created Celebrate Breastfeeding.

More than a fundraiser, Celebrate Breastfeeding is our annual campaign to honor families, recognize the professionals, advocates, and community members working to improve lactation care, and invite others to invest in a future where every family has equitable access to compassionate, culturally responsive lactation support.
