For many children, joining a sports team is a normal part of growing up. It is where they build friendships, learn teamwork, gain confidence, and find something they love. But for our students at Wak̇aŋyeja Ki Ṫokeyaḣc̄i, those opportunities are limited due to funding.

Last year, our students participated in cross country, boys basketball, and track. This year, we hope to expand those opportunities by adding girls basketball and exploring new Indigenous-led sports like archery and lacrosse. But to make those opportunities possible, we need the resources to support our students.

The Challenge

At Wak̇aŋyeja Ki Ṫokeyaḣc̄i, we believe education is about nurturing the whole child.

Our students learn through Lakota language, culture, academics, relationships, and experiences that help them grow into strong, confident leaders. Athletics are an important part of that journey.

Sports teach children how to work together, overcome challenges, build confidence, and care for their physical and mental wellness. They create spaces where students can belong, develop leadership skills, and see themselves as capable of achieving great things.

But expanding athletics comes with challenges. We do not have a gym of our own, and large funding for elementary school sports is difficult to secure. Without additional support, our students may miss out on opportunities that many children experience as a normal part of their education.

Our students should not have fewer opportunities because of a lack of resources.

Our staff work with these students every day. They know our Wak̇aŋyeja, understand their strengths, and have built the trust needed to mentor and guide them. Our people are ready to coach, teach, and create athletic experiences rooted in Lakota values.
