Chancla y Sofrito is a cultural gathering rooted in Puerto Rican tradition and the spirit of the Latino home kitchen. For this event, we are transforming one of our home residency into a community kitchen and art space, creating an intimate house-party style experience centered around food, culture, and conversation.

The name itself reflects the matriarchs who raised us—the mothers, grandmothers, and women who passed down our traditions. The chancla and the sofrito symbolize the lessons, discipline, love, and flavors that shaped our upbringing. This gathering honors those women, including the ones who are no longer with us, whose wisdom and recipes continue to live through us.

Guests can enjoy homemade Puerto Rican dinner plates along with a hands-on sofrito-making workshop where we share the heart of Caribbean cooking.

Throughout the evening, the apartment will also become a living gallery, featuring artists hanging work, live painting, performances, vendors, raffles, and a short community panel with talkbacks reflecting on culture, memory, and the traditions we carry forward.

While Chancla y Sofrito is rooted in Puerto Rican culture, it is also a space that welcomes the broader Latino, Latinx, and Black Latino community. It’s meant to feel like stepping into a home—where food is shared, stories are told, art is on the walls, and community gathers together.

This is not a traditional gallery or storefront event.
It’s a home transformed into a kitchen, a gallery, and a celebration of love, truth, and community.
