Teralta Art, a nonprofit founded during the pandemic, stands firm in the belief that art transcends museum walls and has been an integral part of our daily existence since ancient times. We staunchly advocate that art-making should be an inclusive opportunity, especially for children, reflecting life across all circumstances—be it during a pandemic or times of conflict. Art serves as a sanctuary, sheltering hearts in need, and as an outlet, allowing emotions to flow freely.

At Teralta Art, we believe that art has the power to transform lives and build vibrant communities. Our nonprofit pottery studio is dedicated to providing accessible, low-cost pottery classes, art therapy workshops, student scholarships, and art supplies for children.

OUR MISSION

Located in City Heights, San Diego—a diverse area mainly inhabited by immigrant, refugee, and economically disadvantaged communities—Teralta Art dedicates itself to ensuring equitable art access. Our outreach and programs aim to empower these individuals to engage in the shaping of our regional culture through art-making.

Since our inception in June 2021, we've provided over 2520 individuals with low-cost or free ceramics classes. Many of our regular patrons have not only found solace within our studio but have also forged new connections, fostering a strong sense of community both within and beyond our walls. As responsible citizens, our aspiration is to cultivate a virtuous cycle through art—a continuous positive loop that strengthens bonds and nurtures a thriving community spirit!

2024 IMPACT*

We are a small non-profit supported by the local community who came to take ceramic classes.

Teralta Art has engaged with our community through paid classes:

~1000 unique participants with 3079 total bookings
1277 Wheel Time Sessions - most people couldn't stay away and came back twice!
55 people who took up ceramics in the Beginner Class
35 people who continued to develop their artistic practice in the Intermediate Class
5 different specialized workshops with 46 participants
4 Summer Camp participants who made amazing tea sets

Open Clay	46 sessions, 348 participants with 92 hours of free community engagement
NCRC/Thrive Workshops	63 sessions, 237 participants with 122 hours of free community engagement
Children's Rights Project Workshops	5 workshops, 10 participants with 15 hours of free community engagement

PROVIDING A COMMUNITY VOICE

We actively involve the broader community to understand and cater to their needs effectively by:

Deliberately welcoming refugees to engage in community meetings and programs. By intentionally incorporating these members, we collectively increase awareness, expose everyone to diverse cultures and experiences, and foster relationships that inspire advocacy for positive change.
Inviting partners and extending invitations to individuals who haven't yet participated in our programs. This inclusive method serves as a cornerstone for active community engagement.
Creating purposeful partnerships and joint projects with organizations focused on marginalized communities—such as NCRC, Thrive, and Urban Street Angels—we are committed to driving impactful change and enhancing the well-being of these underserved groups.

OUR CHILDREN'S RIGHT'S PROJECT

The Children's Right's Project is designed to give vulnerable populations a voice and form a sense of community through healing art-making. Through exhibitions, it gives them voices that allow communication and discussion with other communities in society. This project is composed of two parts:

Looking Back at Home is a drawing workshop which includes kids both in affluent areas and those in underserved and marginalized low-wage areas to be aware of other communities in San Diego.
The Shape of Home is a ceramic workshop which includes individuals both in affluent areas and those in underserved and marginalized low-wage areas to reflect and discuss what home means to them, and build empathy for others.

These art activities are designed to find a common ground to initiate mutual understanding for future populations in San Diego.

National Conflict Resolution Center	Urban Street Angels	International Rescue Committee
Collaborating with the NCRC, we offer an alternative to the juvenile justice system, working alongside district attorneys.	Collaborating with USA, we offer homeless youth 18-25 the opportunity to express themselves and gain confidence through creative exploration	Collaborating with the IRC, we provide therapeutic art-making to families affected by war.
