🎓👟 Let's close the STEM Gap, One Step at a Time.

Hispanic or Latinos are nearly 1 in 5 Americans, but earn only 9% of STEM PhDs awarded to U.S. citizens and permanent residents (NSF, 2021). If the path to a science doctorate were 100 steps, Hispanic or Latino scholars should reach 20, but they take just 9 steps. Científico Latino walks to close that gap, one step at a time. Every step you take and every dollar you give helps a student take theirs.

Your gift advances Científico Latino’s vision to train the next generation of scientific leaders and opens the door to enter the scientific workforce. Specifically, you are supporting in making STEM graduate education accessible for our students from low-income, first-generation and underserved communities. Every dollar you give helps a student take their next step toward their dream.

With this walking campaign starting on Hispanic Heritage Month this September 15th, our goal is to walk 1.5 million steps together and raise $20,000 by October 31st to support the following:

1) Graduate School Application Support: scholarships that cover application fees for students applying to graduate programs. In 2025, our GSMI scholars applied to 11 programs on average, that is $1,100 for one graduate school application cycle!

2) Graduate Student Educational Support: $1,000 scholarships for first-year scholars to help them thrive in their programs, covering the cost of laptops, textbooks, and other educational expenses.

3) Program sustainability: funds directed to the greatest need to support our mentorship programs, which include speaker honorariums, staff support, conference travel, expanded programming and core operations that make this impact possible.

The campaign is open to friends, family, and community supporters! All supporters will receive a Científico Latino sticker by mail after the campaign ends.

Those who are interested in becoming fundraisers to join this walking campaign, after signing up, email us at contact@cientificolatino.com so we can provide information on tracking steps and recommended wording for spreading the word!

Your gift ensures that talented students can apply, get in, and stay in graduate school, building a stronger, more inclusive scientific community.
