Simba Café Update – June 16, 2024:

We are excited to report construction on the Simba Café is near completion and will open in a week! After extensive discussions with a local chef in Uganda, we find ourselves in need of $7,950 USD for supplies in order to ensure the kitchen is fully stocked so that our staff can provide each guest with the best experience and highest quality of food and service. In addition, we are raising an additional $6,700 to repay a loan we took for the construction of Simba Cafe

Update - March 28, 2024:

We are so excited to report that the roof is on the Simba Cafe! Once the outside is completed, the crew will start working on the interior. The Women for Conservation Uganda team have already planted a vegetable garden specifically for the cafe, which will enable the produce to go directly from farm to table. Update - March 13, 2024:

Over the past few days, Eric Ndorere has been meeting with Loy (team leader, Women for Conservation Uganda) at the site of Simba Cafe! As you can see from the pictures, work is moving along nicely. We were also happy to receive a visit from Akiikih Apollo Newlife (Director at BACHO-K, who is another partner of Sahaya International, Inc.) Be sure to continue to check this space for updates. Thanks to everyone who voted for their favorite design for the Simba Cafe signage! Below is the winner, and we think it's the perfect choice.

Lumber for the cafe has been delivered to the Community Centre, and once it dries, the contractors will start the framing. We're super excited and will provide updates here and on our social media pages so please check back often. Update January 26, 2024:

Coming Soon: ‘Simba Café’

We have some exciting news we’d like to share, but we need your help in raising $1,797 USD.

Save Wildlife Uganda is currently in the planning stages on the construction of Simba Café, which will be located at the Community Centre and operated by the Women for Conservation Uganda team. The café will offer hot/cold beverages and light snacks for sale. Proceeds will go towards the operation of the Centre, the Women for Conservation Uganda members, and Lights for Lions Uganda Deterrent System.

This is the initial step in a dream the women have of operating a larger restaurant within the Community Centre where they can show off their cooking skills.

Update January 1, 2024:

Our apologies for not providing regular updates, but we’ve been putting the finishing touches on the Community Centre, and we’re happy to report, it’s completed and the Women for Conservation Uganda team have been busy at work creating handmade baskets, placemats, and other beautiful items.

We were extremely happy and honored Dr. Koen Van Rompay (Founder, Secretary-Treasurer) of Sahaya International Inc. (USA) came for a visit at the end of the year and was met by our very own Eric Ndorere who gave him a tour of the Community Centre. Dr. Van Rompay spent quite a bit of time with the Women for Conservation Uganda team and was impressed with how well the operation is running. We are also expecting a visit from the Uganda Tourism Board who will inspect the Community Centre and (fingers crossed) include us on their list of places to visit. UPDATE September 2023:

We invite you to join the Save Wildlife Uganda family as we continue to advocate for wildlife and the communities living alongside them. SWU is currently focused on four projects; (1) completion of the Community Centre, (2) Women for Conservation Uganda, (3) Lights for Lions Uganda Deterrent System, and (4) Queen Elizabeth Primary School. Each initiative is as important as the next because it directly impacts the preservation of Uganda's natural heritage by educating and empowering those who are our current and future ambassadors.

UPDATE JUNE 2023:
We're excited to announce that on June 1, 2023 the Wildlife Uganda Community Center officially opened and is welcoming guests. This opening enables our "Women for Conservation Uganda" team to work everyday creating handmade crafts for purchase. In order to get the Community Center opened, we had to take out a loan which needs to be paid back in a timely manner. Any donation is appreciated and will go a long way in allowing us to continue our goal of making the community self-sufficient. Thank you!

Thanks to this loan, we were able to build bathrooms/washrooms (with septic tank, soak pit, general plumbing), and finish the floor and windows of the training center so our 'Women for Conservation Uganda' team can have a comfortable place to work while creating their one of a kind crafts.

Save Wildlife Uganda intends to bridge the gap between wildlife and human habitation by creating alternative livelihoods for these communities. In doing so, we will achieve coexistence and reduce poaching and wildlife poisoning, which has already claimed the lives of so many animals, but even more importantly, those of Uganda's iconic tree-climbing lion.
