Story
Local Media Association has partnered with leaders in journalism and climate science to create a nationwide news collaborative focused on covering the impacts of climate change at the local level, and ways communities can take action. LMA's affiliate, Local Media Foundation, has launched a program to accept tax-deductible donations that fund LMA’s support of the collaborative.
The Covering Climate Collaborative, launched on Earth Day 2021, includes more than twenty local newsrooms in five regions of the country reporting on the local impacts of and responses to climate change. The newsrooms include Pulitzer-prize winners like Times Picayune and Miami Herald, leading local broadcasters like KGO-TV (SF) and ABC15 (Phoenix), Public Radio stations like WBEZ (Chicago) and WJCT (Jacksonville) and digital startups like Planet Detroit. More: Full list of newsrooms
Newsrooms have reported on the local implications of the 2021 “Code Red” global climate report by the IPCC; the connection between climate and social justice; and focused reporting not only problems but solutions and responses to climate change.
The Covering Climate Collaborative also includes key science and journalism partners like Climate Central, Climate Communication, SciLine, the Center for Climate Change Communication, and Solutions Journalism Network.
“This is the right time to refocus on climate change, its local impacts, and what people can do in their communities to make a difference,” said Frank Mungeam, LMA chief innovation officer. “LMF is excited to bring together the best journalism with the best science in a collaborative to empower the audiences we serve with accurate and actionable reporting.”
Participating news organizations gain access to tools, training and data to enable time-challenged newsrooms to deeply report on climate challenges and meaningful actions their local audience can take; and develop and implement strategies to make climate coverage sustainable. Please donate to support the climate journalism efforts of the Covering Climate Collaborative.
In addition to this online donation method, foundations, philanthropists, and corporate donors interested in supporting the Covering Climate Collaborative are welcome to donate by check or bank transfer.
If you would like to donate by check, please address the check to Local Media Foundation. Please add “Covering Climate Collaborative” to the memo line of the check.
