Heartland Humane Society (HHS) is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit animal welfare organization serving primarily Yankton and Clay counties, with additional services provided across a 12-county region. Established in 2006 from the former Yankton Area Humane Society, our mission is to provide compassionate care, shelter, and rehoming services for animals in need, while promoting responsible pet ownership throughout our region.

HHS is a limited admissions facility, meaning animals are accepted by appointment only and based on available space and resources. This ensures every animal receives the highest standard of care. Our intake process requires coordination to match our capacity with community needs, and we do not accept walk-in surrenders.

We are not affiliated with Animal Control and do not have the authority to seize animals. However, we frequently collaborate with local agencies, tribal communities, and fellow shelters to support stray and displaced animals, including transfers through partners like Greater Good Charities.

All animals at HHS receive veterinary care including vaccinations, spay/neuter surgery, microchipping, and appropriate testing (e.g., heartworm for dogs and FeLV for cats). Local veterinarians perform these services onsite, ensuring timely and comprehensive care.

Our facility includes 19 dog kennels, enrichment areas, multiple cat suites, community cat rooms, and dedicated kitten spaces, all designed to promote animal well-being and interaction with volunteers. Adoption services are offered both by appointment and to walk-ins, with a focus on preparing animals and adopters for successful, lifelong matches.

HHS is funded entirely through private donations, adoption fees, merchandise sales, and community fundraising efforts. We rely on volunteers to support our day-to-day operations and outreach programs. Every contribution helps us continue our work—rescuing, rehabilitating, and rehoming animals who deserve a second chance.
