Cycles of Change needs your help to SAVE THE B’S! Whether it’s the BEES or THE BIKERY, your neighborhood pollinators need some love to make it through another winter!

You already know that we love getting our people on bikes. But did you know we also love… bees? This spring campaign is a celebration of the power of pollination! The bees and the Bikery do so much for the community, but only through the collective power of the hive. We need YOU to join our bikehive so we can keep sharing the sweet honey of bikes and freedom of movement.

As we grow our hive, we will investigate the magic and mystery of the beehive, nature’s original worker-collective. Our beesearch will culminate in a beehive bike tour with Urban Farm Oasis on Sunday, April 19, 2026.

Our Queen Bee is The Bikery, the only full-service bike shop in the flatlands of East Oakland. Each year the educational programs of Cycles of Change transform youth and working class community members into confident cyclists, while The Bikery ensures they can continue riding by providing quality low-cost bikes, sliding-scale repairs, and bike mechanics education.

The Bikery is an essential community resource in the San Antonio District. We pride ourselves on going above and beyond for our people, fixing not only bikes, but also vendor carts and youth scooters. However, due to rising costs and federal funding cuts, we are struggling to keep the shop open and our costs low.

This spring, we’re hoping to grow our Sustainer Hive to 100 sustainers. We’re currently at 68 sustainers. Will you join our bikehive? No matter who you are, you have a role to play!

🍯 CYCLES BIKEHIVE PERKS 🍯

$10/month - Forager Bee: Collects nectar in their honey sacks and pollen in their pollen baskets

Help the bikehive gift a commuter safety kit (including helmet, lock, lights, and patch kit) to a new cyclist.
Perks: 15% discount on repairs and parts. We appreciate you for bringing us the sweetness!

$25/month - Worker Bee: The most common type of bee in the hive! They do all sorts of things like cleaning, nursing, and building honeycombs.

Your contribution provides a fully refurbished high-quality bike for an East Oakland community member.
Perks: Free yearly tune-up and a shirt. We thank you from the bottom of our stingers for all your hard work!

$50/month - Guard Bee: Protects the hive! Middle-aged worker bees that attack and sting intruders. They can also warn the rest of the hive of danger through emitting pheromones.

Make it possible for two working class adults to attend our commuter class and receive a fully outfitted and refurbished bike, leaving with all the resources and knowledge they need to be commuters!
Perks: Free yearly tune-up, Cycles shirt, commuter accessories, stickers, and acknowledgement on the website. Thanks for holding it down and keeping us safe!

$100/month - Drone: male bees, making up about 10-15% of the population. Their sole function is reproduction; they either die after mating or get pushed out during the winter.

Your loving sacrifice as a Drone Bee helps us provide 10 tune-ups for working class commuters.
Perks: Custom cockpit rebuild OR rack/basket installation, a free tune-up, 15% discount on all Bikery repairs, 1 Cycles shirt, stickers, and acknowledgement on website. We promise not to push you out during the winter!

$250/month - Queen Bee: the center of the hive! Queen bees lays 1,200 eggs a day AND regulates the activity of the hive through pheromones. We need you for a healthy hive!

Queen Bees get very special treatment, including a custom build from the Bikery or our “Special Tune Up” which includes an overhaul on all systems of your bike! Queen Bees also receive the perks of the other bees, including 15% discount on Bikery repairs and parts, Cycles merch, and acknowledgement on the website.

OUR STORY

Cycles of Change has built social, educational and technical infrastructure for East Oakland residents to rely on bikes instead of cars for everyday transportation for nearly three decades. We began as a single Bike Club in Roosevelt Middle School's basement in 1998 with a small-but-mighty staff of three educators leading after-school bike adventures and bike-earning opportunities. Over the years, we expanded Bike Club to more schools, established Upcycle (our adult commuter programs for low-income Oakland residents), opened The Bikery, and began offering a countywide in-school bicycle safety program.
