The Bikery is the only full-service bike shop serving the Flatlands of East Oakland. We offer affordable bike repairs and accessible programming that helps our community access equitable transportation through the joy of biking. The Bikery is an essential community resource that extends far beyond bicycles – Our staff can often be found repairing the carts of neighborhood fruit vendors, helping neighborhood youth fix their scooters and skateboards, or offering free services to houseless community members. With our doors always open for anyone who stops by, the Bikery is a welcoming space where everyone is treated with respect and offered support to meet their transportation needs on their own terms.

Putting people over profits is central to our mission of building community wellness and advancing transportation justice in an area deeply impacted by environmental racism. While our low-cost repairs and free mechanical assistance for vulnerable Oakland communities are more needed than ever, the combined economic pressures facing both our local community and the cycling industry have made it increasingly difficult to maintain these services while remaining financially viable. To continue this essential work, Cycles of Change and the Bikery are now reaching out to YOU for support to ensure we can sustain these vital services for years to come.

Bikery History

Cycles of Change is a collectively-run organization whose work has centered around the San Antonio district for over 25 years. Cycles is grounded in the belief that everyone should have access to the economic, environmental and health benefits of biking, and is committed to bridging the many barriers for low-income people of color to access this sustainable means of transportation. As an all-PoC, collectively-run organization, Cycles of Change is made up of the people it serves, and is deeply rooted in local community, working through an equity lens to combat the environmental racism faced by East Oakland residents and empower them through the magic of bicycles.

In 2009, in response to growing community needs, Cycles of Change opened the Bikery, a full-service bike shop in the San Antonio District. The Bikery is committed to making bikes accessible to everybody by offering sliding-scale and low-cost bikes and repairs in our predominantly Black and brown neighborhood. The Bikery also provides classes and workshops, earn-a-bike programs, an open repair space, and high school internships while serving as a hub of community.
