Why Your Support Matters
I’m dancing because I was inspired by my Mother, Flora May Hansen (our nonprofit's namesake). My parents had 9 children, yet somehow she found the time to consistently volunteer at San Clemente Hospital, and had the most creative ways of giving - to anyone who needed help. I could share a great story on that topic!
My Mom was passionate about and loved to dance. I must have hundreds of photos of her dancing around Orange & San Diego Counties, with her grown kids (and grandkids) at her side. Flora was dancing until age 96 when she passed away, almost 3 years ago. My Mom is my inspiration, and always will be.
I'm also committed to challenging myself physically. Last year I fell 8-10 feet off a ladder, landing on my right foot. It broke in 3 places and I'm still rehabilitating. I was bedridden for 4 months, used a wheelchair, and couldn't drive. I don't have feeling in most of my right foot, but can make it move! By participating in DWTS, I'm intentionally pushing my physical boundaries, and past the discomfort.

For the last 9 years, The Flora May Foundation has helped strengthen families by addressing intertwined issues: Mental and economic stability, which go hand in hand for improving life at home.
I believe families thrive when parents are supported emotionally and empowered economically. That’s why The Flora May Foundation is built upon two equally important pillars:
Parent Support Services and Working Women Winning (WWW).
Parent Support Services:
When a child struggles with mental health, neurodivergence, bipolar, depression, anxiety, truancy, substance abuse, is system-impacted, or has high-risk behaviors; the entire family is affected. Parents are often forced to make life-changing decisions for their children, with little guidance or knowledge, including inpatient vs. outpatient treatment is the right path for their adolescent.
Our team, made up entirely of women, with lived-experience raising at-risk children, understand the journey many parents are enduring. We provide no cost confidential consultations, guidance, education, therapy through our health partners, crisis intervention, emergency transportation and parental support groups. We also offer movement therapy through weekly yoga and tai chi classes.
Working Women Winning (WWW):
Economic stability is equally important to a family’s well-being. Our award-winning Working Women Winning workforce development program empowers women to build brighter futures through career readiness, digital skills training, Microsoft Office certification, personal finance education, résumé and interview preparation, internships, job placement assistance, and professional clothing through our partner Working Wardrobes.
At The Flora May Foundation, we believe families deserve more than hope. They need a detailed and proven "roadmap" moving forward, from those who've walked in the very same shoes.
