A Critical Skills Gap

When Dr. Miriam Krause from the Center for Sustainable Nanotechnology (CSN) approached us about addressing a critical training gap for their summer undergraduate training program, we immediately recognized the opportunity! According to our discussions, students possess the technical skills to collect data, but often struggle to visually communicate their findings in a clear, accurate, and impactful manner.

Our Solution: From Pitfalls to Principles

We've designed a hands-on, interactive workshop that will teach undergraduate researchers how to identify common data visualization pitfalls, apply core design principles, and critically evaluate visualizations for effectiveness and accuracy. Unlike typical tutorials, our approach focuses on learning through intentionally bad examples—having students create "what not to do" that incorporates the very mistakes they can avoid before supporting them with resources to make clear data visuals.

Our workshop isn't just theoretical—it's measurable. We've established clear learning outcomes and metrics to ensure participants gain skills they can apply immediately to their research.

The Gap We Need to Bridge - Why We Need $500

While CSN has committed $500 toward this initiative, we need to raise an additional $500 to fully fund this workshop. This remaining amount will cover:

Development of custom teaching materials, including a fictional dataset specifically designed to highlight visualization pitfalls
Creation of pre- and post-workshop assessment tools to measure learning outcomes
Expert facilitation of the interactive workshop
Follow-up support to ensure students can apply what they've learned
