DCS and the 2023 Delaware Marathon Running Festival

Who We Are: DCS is a college access program. We focus on getting underserved scholars through high school, and then ultimately to, and through, college. At DCS we have found a direct connection between supporting our scholars with college access and raising their awareness around overall wellness.

What We Believe: It is not good enough for us to support our scholars with the academic knowledge and the nuts & bolts of the college process - we must make sure we approach their development holistically. With this in mind, we have intentionally added physical and emotional wellness to what we offer to our scholars since 2021.

How We Will Do It: The Delaware Running Festival and the dedication it takes to complete such an event is a microcosm of what we do with our scholars and college access. Running such a race is a daunting task - just like how envisioning going to college and the difficulties in getting through the process is for many of our first-generation scholars.

Just like with preparing for a race, we take the college process one step at a time. We train our minds and habits the same way people prepare and take weeks to prepare for a race. We look ourselves in the mirror and face our doubts and worries head on - ultimately once we learn the rules of the race/college process, we are competing against ourselves and the mental hurdle that it takes to overcome the challenge in front of us. And just like with a marathon, we take it one step at a time until we accomplish our goal and get our scholars to their ‘next’.

We felt it important to compete in the Delaware Marathon annually because it is a reflection of what we do regularly with our scholars while also embodying our intention of aligning college access with physical and emotional wellness.

A unique cohort of other learners to encourage & inspire them
