Deep Roots, Lasting Legacy

Help restore the headwaters of Paulina Spring and protect this special place for generations to come.

Paulina Spring is a natural spring that feeds Indian Ford Creek and supports the rich habitat of the Black Butte region. But years of concentrated foot traffic around the headwaters have taken a toll. Soils have become compacted, native vegetation has been trampled, and tree roots along the spring’s banks have been left exposed.

The restoration has already begun.

Black Butte Ranch has invested in the critical infrastructure needed to protect this sensitive area, including new gravel pathways, fencing to create protected vegetation islands, strategically placed boulders to retain soil, benches, and an initial round of native plantings.

Now, Black Butte Conservancy is helping take the restoration across the finish line.

Through our Deep Roots, Lasting Legacy campaign, we are raising funds for the next phase: restoring a healthy, resilient community of native plants around the spring.

Your donation will help add native plants, such as Oregon grape, Snowberry, Woods’ Rose and Quaking Aspen, along with transplanted Grand Fir. Downed ponderosa pine logs will also be carefully placed within the restoration area, helping retain moisture, build soil and create the conditions native plants need to thrive.

Together, these efforts will help stabilize the spring’s banks, protect vulnerable tree roots, restore native habitat and allow this beautiful waterway to recover naturally over time.

The roots we establish today will protect Paulina Spring tomorrow.

Join Black Butte Conservancy in restoring the headwaters of Paulina Spring, protecting a vital natural spring that feeds Indian Ford Creek and helps sustain the connected lands, waters and wildlife of the greater Black Butte region.

Deep roots. Healthy waters. A lasting legacy.

The Black Butte Conservancy is an all-volunteer non-profit with the mission to build and empower our community to protect and preserve the Black Butte region, now and for the future. The Black Butte region, located within the Deschutes National Forest in Central Oregon, encompasses four watersheds that originate from the summit of Black Butte: Lower Lake Creek, Lower Indian Ford, Upper Indian Ford, and Cache Creek. This vital region, supporting both wildlife and human communities, includes the Metolius River, Suttle Lake, and Indian Ford Creek. We are guided by five core tenets that determine the scope of our work – Stewardship, Connection, Restoration, Conservation, and Collaboration. The key to our success is our commitment to collaboration with local and national governmental agencies, and local non-profits to further our collective conservation efforts in the Black Butte region.
