Who We Are

Cristosal is a regional human rights organization working across El Salvador, Guatemala, and Honduras. For over 25 years, we have defended rights, supported victims, and promoted just and democratic societies. We stand with communities resisting repression, displacement, and corruption—turning human rights violations into evidence, advocacy, and systemic change.

Our work is built on three pillars:

Justice – Defending victims through legal advocacy and strategic litigation.
Truth – Documenting abuses through forensic research and preserving historical memory.
Voice – Protecting civic space and amplifying those who refuse to be silenced.

Why This Moment Matters

Across Central America, the defense of human rights faces urgent challenges.

In El Salvador, due process continues to erode. In April, 486 people were prosecuted in a mass trial under the state of exception, while Cristosal has documented at least 86 political prisoners, including Anti-Corruption Unit head Ruth López, detained since May 18, 2025. Cristosal continues to advocate for Ruth’s release and support her family, including by helping raise awareness of the serious concerns surrounding her health and detention.
In Guatemala, years of politically motivated prosecutions under former Attorney General Consuelo Porras have left defenders under pressure, though her successor’s appointment offers a cautious opening for accountability.
In Honduras, land conflicts remain deadly: 20 peasant farmers were killed in Rigores, part of a broader pattern of violence spanning 124 municipalities.

Despite these challenges, communities across the region continue to mobilize to defend democracy and the rule of law.
