Lemhi County Crisis Intervention Inc. was incorporated in 1994 in response to nine suicides the county experienced in 1993. Mental health professionals and domestic violence shelter programs from Southeast Idaho were invited to help our community understand and address the issues of suicide, domestic violence, and sexual assault in Lemhi County. Their visit determined that the community would provide and operate a small emergency shelter for victims of personal crime.

We were granted 501(c)(3) nonprofit status on June 22, 2001. In December of that year, thanks to a grant award from the CHC Foundation, the property on Main Street in Salmon, Idaho, was purchased as the official site of our agency. Because the home had previously belonged to the beloved Mahoney Family, we became known as The Mahoney Family Safety Center. As time passed, we were most often referred to as The Mahoney House, and this became our assumed business name in 2021. In September 2025, we moved to our current location on Hwy 93 North.

Since its inception, The Mahoney House has been a community leader in providing safe shelter, support, and hope to people victimized by domestic violence and sexual assault. To meet evolving needs, we continue to broaden our efforts.
