Destined Inc. is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization whose mission is to promote and lead youth literacy programming across Athens and surrounding counties. Founded in 1999 by the Smith Sisters—Dr. Tawana Smith Mattox (Dr. T), Dr. Reneta Smith Elder, Dr. Jo Smith, and the late Stacie Smith—the organization began as Expert Readers with its first summer camp at Triangle Plaza, serving 50 students from across Athens.

In 2014, Expert Readers Inc. changed its name to Destined Inc., a title that more accurately reflects the program’s outcomes and vision. Destined Inc. has consistently served up to 35 students during the school year and up to 50 students each summer, reaching 73 students in 2025. Over the years, the Destined team has engaged and supported hundreds of children as they develop strong reading skills alongside essential social and life skills. Through a partnership with Southern Sustainable Institute, the organization has developed and implemented our STEAM program focusing on sustainability, solar and energy. It is called "It's Electric" and we have formally incorporated Educational Access Unlimited as an initiative that will continue to support the community through various ways of enhancing the community.

The ultimate goal of Destined Inc. is to equip students with the foundational tools they need to become responsible adults and pursue their dreams without limits while bridging resources for adults. In addition to its core literacy programs, Destined Inc. offers book giveaways, book scholarships for graduating seniors, and community outreach events such as reading carnivals and book report fairs. In past years, the Destined team has also celebrated a winning Black History Bowl team and managed a traveling singing group.

Destined Inc.’s success is deeply rooted in strong partnerships with parents. Together, families and the Destined team work to academically, socially, and economically improve each student’s future through literacy. Destined’s motto is, “We Succeed Together, and It Works.”
