About Destined Inc.

Destined Inc. is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization committed to advancing youth literacy across Athens and surrounding counties. Since 1999, Destined has empowered young people to develop a love of reading while building the academic, social, and life skills needed for long-term success.

Founded by the Smith Sisters—Dr. Tawana Smith Mattox (Dr. T), Dr. Reneta Smith Elder, Dr. Jo Smith, and the late Stacie Smith—Destined began as Expert Readers, launching its first summer camp at Triangle Plaza and serving 50 students from across Athens. In 2014, the organization became Destined Inc., a name that reflects its bold vision and proven outcomes.

Today, Destined Inc. serves up to 35 students during the school year and up to 50 students each summer, reaching 73 students in 2025. Over the years, hundreds of children have benefited from Destined’s literacy-based programming designed to strengthen reading proficiency and essential life skills.

Through a partnership with Southern Sustainable Institute, Destined Inc. developed It’s Electric, a STEAM initiative focused on sustainability, solar, and energy education. The organization also leads Educational Access Unlimited, an initiative created to expand learning opportunities and community support.

Beyond literacy instruction, Destined Inc. offers book giveaways, book scholarships for graduating seniors, and community outreach events such as reading carnivals and book report fairs. The organization has also celebrated a championship Black History Bowl team and previously managed a traveling singing group.

Destined Inc.’s impact is built on strong partnerships with families. Together, parents and educators work to strengthen each child’s academic, social, and economic future through literacy.
