At TONYC, we don’t just tell stories — we ignite action. We work in collaboration with communities confronting systemic oppression, using Augusto Boal’s Theatre of the Oppressed and the political teachings of Paulo Friere as a powerful tool for systemic transformation. Our work doesn’t just raise awareness; it demands change.

Right now, we’re seeing what happens when those who demand change are impeded by great institutional power. And rather than fighting back, many foundation and nonprofit leaders are hunkering down; attempting to wait out an administration that will, in the meantime, have a devastating impact on many of our communities.

TONYC refuses to comply. And, as an organization led by and for People of Color, LGBTQIA+ identifying people, and communities impacted by unjust policy and prejudice across New York City, we could only comply by unbeing. This is our fight not just because our values and mission demand as much, but because it is for our very autonomy, freedom, and lives.

The time to fight is always now - not when it is most convenient and safe to do so. And this means that, more than ever, we need your support. At a time when institutional and government backing are deeply uncertain, we are looking toward our community, allies, and co-conspirators to help us build power.
